Learning Styles of Students with Visual Impairments and Teaching Approaches

Abstract

This study aims to identify the learning styles of students with visual impairments and the teaching activities used by their teachers, and to propose teaching activities that align with the diverse learning styles of students. The research involved three teachers and 18 students from a special school for children with visual impairments in the capital city. Data was collected through surveys regarding the students' intellectual abilities and the teachers' teaching activities. To determine the general patterns of the students' different intellectual abilities and the teaching activities used by the teachers in the classroom, a statistical analysis of multiple-choice responses was conducted. The findings of the study indicate that interpersonal, intrapersonal, and bodily-kinesthetic intelligences are dominant in students with visual impairments. Their teachers are using 7 to 10 teaching activities out of 57 that are suitable for the common 7 intelligences of these students in their lessons. Based on the results of the study, recommendations for teaching activities that can suit the diverse learning styles of students with visual impairments were proposed to the teachers.
