About the Journal
In the 1930s, when the teacher training system in the Mongolian People's Republic was not fully established and it was difficult to provide rural areas with professional teachers, the only means used by the government and the Ministry of Education to enhance teachers' teaching skills was the '”Teachers' Journal”, which was later followed by the “Surgan Khumuujuulegch” (“Educator”). The editorial policy of these educational journals encompassed a broad range of issues on teaching and upbringing, while also reflecting and developing in accordance with the public enlightenment policies advocated by the party at the time.
However, following the social changes of 1989-1990, the journal “Educator” lost government funding and subscribers, eventually ceasing publication in 1991. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the fall of the socialist system, a crisis engulfed the economy and society of the Mongolian People's Republic from the early 1990s, which influenced this situation on one hand. On the other hand, the end of the socialist and communist-oriented social system and the failure to adapt the educational philosophy—directly reflecting its values—to the demands of the new era can be seen as the reason for the journal's discontinuation.
In this context, in 1991, the 'Philosophy for the Development of Education in the Mongolian People's Republic' and the Education Law of the Mongolian People's Republic were adopted. A new system, based on all forms of ownership and previously envisioned as “state schooling” was established in the educational landscape, promoting the concept of “universal lifelong education”. This marked the beginning of integrating the science of teaching and upbringing (pedagogy) with theories and methodologies of adult education (androgogy) and study of aging and older adults (gerontology).
It became clear that the field of pedagogy and psychology, as we as we had envisioned it, is entirely encompassed by the science of education in other countries. All of this created the need to establish the science of education in Mongolia in alignment with international standards while considering local characteristics, and to publish a professional journal with new approaches to educational theory and methodology that would promote and disseminate this knowledge in society.
In response to this need, our colleagues initiated a series of methodological publications named “Vocational Education” in 1991 and “Educational Studies” in 1995, and subsequently, with the experience and preparations for creating a professional journal, we began the publication of the bi-monthly journal 'Educational Research” in 2002, which focuses on the theories and methodologies of educational development.
The founders' meeting was held on February 13, 2002 and it was decided to establish the journal “Educational Research” as a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to serving the public and concentrating on the theory and methodology of educational development. In March 2002, it was granted a certificate from the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs.
Throughout the past two decades, the journal's editorial policy, content, writing style, format, and quality have been continuously refined, and it is in the process of evolving into a leading professional journal in the field of educational theory and methodology in Mongolia.
In 2003, the Sub-Assembly of Social Sciences of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences granted the journal “Educational Research” the status of a professional journal in the field of education and decided to publish and recognize scholarly articles and works.
The journal 'Educational Studies' was newly registered in 2023 on the list of academic journals for publishing works related to doctoral and scientific doctoral degrees through the Ministry of Education and Science.
The editorial team has regularly made adjustments to the journal's scope, cover, layout, and writing standards, gradually bringing it in line with the standards of similar international journals in the field of education. Consequently, the journal has attained a significantly high level of quality in both content and format. In April 2016, it was registered under international journal standards and received an international index (ISSN-2415-3559).
As new perspectives on education take shape in Mongolia and the outcomes of educational research grow, it has become crucial to unite researchers, educators, and students in an organized effort to disseminate their knowledge and mobilize their strengths and resources for the advancement of education. In this regard, the role of a theoretical and methodological journal in promoting educational research knowledge within society is significant.
The contributions of the journal to the educational research system in Mongolia can be outlined as follows:
- The journal promotes new achievements and contributions in Mongolian educational research to society.
- It delivers timely information on international educational development to teachers, researchers, students and learners.
- The journal supports young researchers by promoting their work to the public.
- It focuses on fostering to create new knowledge and accelerating the process of implementing its outcomes in everyday life.
- The journal's editorial policy aims to expand and deepen readers' knowledge of the theories and methodologies related to educational development in both Mongolia and abroad.
In order to fulfill this responsibility, the editorial team has taken steps to strategically direct the content of the materials published in the journal, enhance quality requirements, and facilitate easy access to information for the public. One of these initiatives includes the launch of the journal's website, which allows users to read and utilize its content online. Consequently, the diversity, quantity, and quality of the submissions from researchers, teachers, and students have been improving year by year.
In the future, the editorial team will prioritize enhancing the quality of the journal and has several issues to tackle. First and foremost, we will implement measures to fully adopt the design standards commonly followed by international educational research journals in the coming years. Another crucial step in improving the journal’s quality will be to clarify the standards for articles submitted for publication and to strictly implement these standards. By executing the planned initiatives, we aim to support our mission of becoming an internationally recognized educational research journal that provides the public with research findings and promotes knowledge in the field of educational sciences.
