Abstract

Nunnejav (1899–1932), the eldest son of Bavuujav—the Meiren Justice Hero of the Zost League in Inner Mongolia—was a distinguished scholar and educator. After graduating from Waseda University in Japan in 1924, he moved to Mongolia, where he served as а director of the Teachers’ Training School until September 1930. Whether he came to Mongolia of his own initiative or at the invitation of the Mongolian government remains unclear. However, given that the government had invited several other Mongolian scholars, including Tsogtbadamjav, Gombobadamjav, and Davabadamjav, who were then working in Japan, it is plausible that Nunnejav, too, was officially invited.

As an intellectual, Nunnejav made substantial contributions to the consolidation and development of Mongolia’s educational system. Beginning in 1925, he played an important role in improving teachers’ professional competence, enriching school curricula, and advancing mathematical pedagogy and translation culture. His four mathematics textbooks—The Science of Algebraic Formulas, The Science of Measuring Plane Triangles, A Treatise Explaining the Science of Numbers, and Elementary School Arithmetic Problems—were the first works to present mathematical education in Mongolia on a scientific basis. His translation of Mongolia’s Early History and Its Study was also one of the earliest attempts to systematically introduce foreign historiographical sources into Mongolian historical scholarship. Furthermore, his 1931 work, A Table for Testing Arithmetic Skills and World Knowledge, constitutes an important primary source for understanding the origins of Mongolia’s educational assessment system.

Although Mongolian historians have discussed various aspects of Nünnejav’s life, little attention has been given to the structure, content, and pedagogical value of his mathematics textbooks, as well as to the Japanese works he translated. This study seeks to address these gaps by providing a detailed examination of his contributions.
